The Advantages of Offshore Staffing and Which Ones Last

The Advantages of Offshore Staffing, and Which Ones Last

The Advantages of Offshoring

Offshore staffing gives you five main advantages:Β access to hard-to-fill skills, extra capacity, longer coverage across time zones, a simpler way to employ people overseas, and lower employment costs. The cost saving is the one you notice first, but management time, set-up work, and turnover wear it down. Capacity and knowledge of your business take longer to build and hold their value better, as long as the same person stays.Β

If you’re weighing up a first hire, that order matters. Below is how each advantage plays out over the first couple of years, where the evidence comes from, and a short test to run before you start recruiting.Β

What are the advantages of offshore staffing?

Most Australian businesses start offshore staffing for one reason, usually a role they can’t fill or a cost they need to bring down. They discover the other benefits of offshoring once someone is in the role. Some show up in the first month, and others take a year or more to build. Here’s what each look like in practice, starting with the one that makes the strongest case.Β

  1. Access to skills you can’t hire locally

Jobs and Skills Australia’s 2025 Occupation Shortage List found 29% of occupations in shortage, including two in five professional occupations. If you’ve had a role advertised for months without a suitable applicant, a qualified professional in the Philippines or South Africa may be the quickest way to get that work done.

The talent pool is large, too. According to industry body IBPAP, the Philippine IT-BPM sector provided 1.9 million jobs in 2025.Β

  1. Extra capacity for your existing team

In a growing business, a lot of work sits half-finished because the people who could finish it are busy with something more urgent. Month-end reconciliations, weekly reporting, and first-line support are common examples. The advantages of offshore outsourcing include being able to hand that work to a dedicated specialistΒ gives your existing team those hours back.Β
  1. Longer coverage across time zones

Manila is two hours behind Sydney and Melbourne in winter and three hours behind during daylight saving. Perth shares its time zone. That makes the Philippines a good fit for work that needs real-time collaboration, because your working days overlap for most of the day.

South Africa sits eight to nine hours behind the east coast. A specialist there can pick up work as your office closes and hand it back finished by the next morning. Used together, the two countries give you follow-the-sun coverage. Work keeps moving after your team goes home, and nobody works a night shift to make it happen. Where a role needs it, staff can also shift their hours to line up with yours. Which setup you choose depends on whether the work needs you in the conversation or just needs to be done by morning.Β

  1. Simpler employment through an employer of record

Employing someone in the Philippines yourself means following Philippine labour law. That includes 13th month pay, which private employers must pay rank-and-file staff by 24 December each year. Most Australian businesses don’t have a local entity or payroll team to manage that.

An employer of record solves the problem. The provider becomes the legal employer in that country and handles contracts, payroll, tax, and statutory contributions, while you direct the work day to day. Staff Domain takes on that role in both the Philippines and South Africa, so your manager’s time goes on the work itself.Β

  1. Lower employment costs

A well-known advantage of offshore staffing is cost.

For the same role, salaries and overheads in the Philippines and South Africa are well below what you’d pay in Sydney or Melbourne. That difference matters to any business watching its margins.

Understandably, it also draws the most scrutiny. People worry about local jobs and about whether offshore staff are paid fairly, and when a business uses offshore staffing to replace people it already employs, the criticism about jobs is often fair. However, when it fills roles the business can’t fill locally, it adds capacity and helps protect the jobs already there. On pay, while we can’t speak for other providers, Staff Domain pays above the local market rate as part of our ethical outsourcing standard.

Cost is the easiest advantage to measure, but as the next section explains, it’s also the easiest to lose.Β

Why does the cost advantage fade first?

When done wrong, the advantages of offshoring can easily turn into disadvantages.Β  With cost, what you save with theΒ salary gap is the only part you see on day one. Everything that eats into itΒ you noticeΒ later, and two things do most of the damage.

The first is the time it takes to get someone productive. Someone in your business writes the role brief, sits in on interviews, and answers questions in the first few weeks, all on top of their own workload. They check work until they trust it. Any process that lives in one person’s head has to be written down before anyone else can follow it.Β

These costs are easy to underestimate. A 2013 study in the Strategic Management Journal found that decision-makers made more cost-estimation errors as offshored work became more complex. Two things reduced those errors: experience, and a strong focus on organisational design.Β

The secondΒ saving-eater is turnover. When an offshore hire resigns, you pay for recruitment and onboarding again, and the replacement starts from scratch on your clients and systems. Aon’s 2025 Salary Increase and Turnover Study recorded 20% employee attrition in the Philippines, above the 17.5% average across the six Southeast Asian countries it surveyed.Β

In offshoring, two businesses can pay the same rate and end up in different places. One keeps the same specialist for three years, and the saving grows each year. The other refills the role twice and spends much of its saving on starting over.Β

This is where Staff Domain puts its effort, and it’s why we won’t be the lowest rate you’re quoted. Every new hire starts with a structured four-week onboarding programme, coordinated by a dedicated Client Success Manager. It covers orientation, security set-up, your systems and processes, guided practice, and a first performance check. That’s the organisational design the study pointed to, planned before your hire’s first day. Across 700+ deployed seats,Β we’veΒ seen where first placements go wrong, and we set up each new role with that experience in mind. In an industry that runs on a 20-30% average on attrition, we run on a minimal 7%.

Which advantages of offshore staffing do last?

Two advantages last and grow: capacity and knowledge of your business. Three hold steady: access to skills, time zone coverage, and simpler employment through an employer of record. Only cost shrinks.Β

The two that grow have one thing in common. They live in the person, so they last only as long as the person stays.Β

Picture an offshore accountant at six months compared with 18 months. At six months, they know accounting and they know your software. At 18 months, they also know which clients need chasing, which supplier always invoices late, and which figures the board looks at first. You can’t hire that knowledge in. It comes only from time in the role, and it leaves when the person does.Β

That makes how you treat people as important as what you pay them. At Staff Domain, we hold ourselves and our clients to a standard we call ethical outsourcing:Β

“Ethical outsourcing means treating an offshore hire exactly as you would an in-office hire: a real onboarding, a real manager, a real career path, and above-market pay in their market. The test is simple. If you would not do it to someone sitting in your office, do not do it to someone sitting in Manila.”Β

In practice, that means the same onboarding, the same regular check-ins, and the same room to grow you’d give someone in your own office. People who are treated as part of the team are the ones still there in year three. It’s also why we’d rather be judged on year three than on the first invoice.

Isn't cost the whole point?

Plenty of CFOs would say yes, and their argument deserves a proper hearing. Cost is the one advantage you can put on a profit and loss statement in year one. Extra capacity is harder to show, and “the team has more time now” won’t carry much weight in a board paper.Β

The skills shortage is also easing. Jobs and Skills Australia reports that the share of occupations in shortage fell from 36% in 2023 to 33% in 2024 and 29% in 2025, helped by more qualified applicants and higher vacancy fill rates. For some roles, hiring locally is easier than it was two years ago.Β

We accept both points. Where we differ is on whether cost can carry the decision by itself. A saving that rests only on the rate is exposed to the hidden costs described above, and to changes in the market. IBPAP itself has named South Africa, Egypt, Poland, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Vietnam as countries now competing with the Philippines. Rates will move over the next few years, and a specialist who knows your business is worth just as much to you after they do.Β

So if the only reason you can give for a role is that it costs less offshore, we’d suggest holding off until you have a better one.

When are the advantages of offshore staffing weakest?

Some roles won’t see the lasting benefits, however well the person is treated. Anything that needs someone on site, like handling stock or meeting clients in person, is a poor fit. So is work that nobody in your business can describe in detail, because a new hire can’t learn a standard that hasn’t been set. And if nobody has time to manage the role, the arrangement will struggle whichever country the person is in.Β

We’d also be clear about what offshore staffing is for. It works as added capacity, for work that isn’t getting done orΒ roles you can’t fill. We don’t recommend it as a way to replace people you already employ.Β

How can you tell if the advantages will last?

Before you start recruiting, answer these three questions.Β

  1. Would you still make this hire if the savings were half what you’ve been quoted? If the role is on the Jobs and Skills Australia shortage list, or has sat unfilled for months, the answer is often yes.

  2. Who will manage this person day to day? You should be able to name them.
    Β
  3. Is there a written plan for the first 90 days?Β

If you can answer all three with confidence, the advantages should hold well beyond the first year. If you’re stuck on the second or third question, sort it out before you recruit. Both are fixable, and at Staff Domain, your Client Success Manager helps build the performance plan with you. If the answer to the first question is no, then the hire is resting on cost alone, and it’s worth waiting.Β

Talk to us about your first two roles once you’ve worked through the questions. If one of them isn’t ready to go offshore, we’ll say so.Β

FAQ

What are the advantages of offshore staffing?Β

Access to skills you can’t hire locally, added capacity, longer coverage across time zones, simpler employment through an employer of record, and lower employment costs. Capacity and knowledge of your business are the advantages that grow, as long as the hire stays.Β

What are the disadvantages of offshore staffing?Β

Time zone limits, the management time a new hire needs, a ramp-up period, and roles that need someone on site. A named manager and a planned onboarding reduce most of these, though they can’t replace physical presence.Β

Does offshore staffing cost less than hiring locally?Β

In most cases, yes. The real saving is smaller than the salary gap once management time, onboarding, and turnover are counted.Β

Is it hard to hire skilled staff in Australia?Β

Less than it was, but still hard in many fields. Jobs and Skills Australia’s 2025 Occupation Shortage List found 29% of occupations in shortage, including two in five professional occupations.Β

What is the difference between offshore staffing and outsourcing?Β

With offshore staffing, you hire a dedicated person who works only for your business, under your direction. With outsourcing, a provider runs the process and decides how the work gets done.Β
