When Jennie Keith Salalila accepted an opportunity to work with a Sydney based Accounting Firm, she never expected it to take her to the iconic Harbour Bridge. That’s exactly what happened for this Filipino accountant. She accepted a job based in Manila and was immediately offered the opportunity to complete her induction and training in Sydney.

Staff Domain advocates for the training of staff at their employer’s head office. Thorough and effective induction programs are often run at Staff Domain by the BPO and the client. However, having the opportunity to learn on the ground also presents a unique opportunity for the team to connect and unite at speed.

In Jennie’s case, her induction period was two months, all based in Sydney and right in the thick of tax season. Her on the job training was quickly followed by workplace coaching as she started to work on the lodgment of tax returns. Her familiarity with MYOB, Xero, and Quickbooks worked to her advantage.

“The first week was the most challenging because this was my adjustment period. After getting the hang of the work process, the transition became easier for me. I gained a better understanding of how my employer likes to finalise tax returns, their system of organising workpapers, and their general workflow. I also gained a better understanding of Superannuation funds,” Jennie shared.

As a trained and experienced accountant, Jennie had the opportunity to work directly with the firm’s clients.

She was quick to add that her coworkers provided her with exceptional support. They accommodated any questions she had about work and the firm’s accounting processes. Her clients were also incredibly welcoming, and she was made to feel very much at home by all.

While in Sydney, Jennie lived in a flat close to work. She made her way around the city using public transport and enjoyed lots of after work leisure time with her new co-workers. They’d go out for drinks and share a meal after hours. Jennie says they’ve developed a genuine close relationship over the term of her stay.

“I am so grateful that I met the team personally. I never imagined that my training would be fun, challenging, and exciting at the same time. I will forever treasure the experience I had with my colleagues during my stay in Sydney,” says Jennie.

It is her belief that by working together with the team in Sydney, she has truly become embedded as part of the team. Jennie is set to come home on the 10th of August 2019, but will be returning to Sydney after her visa is renewed for further training and development. She notes that her two-month stay in Australia has made her grow so much as a person and as a professional.

“I would like to thank Staff Domain and my employer for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I really enjoyed my stay in Sydney. I not only learned about their accounting processes but also gained an understanding of their work culture. I will surely miss the local team who were very welcoming and are a pleasure to be around,” Jennie concluded.

Jennie is just one of many professionals who will get to travel as part of their workplace training. In the months to come, Staff Domain will be helping more Filipino staff to travel to Australia and New Zealand.
