If you’re having a hard time staying productive while working remotely, then you came to the right place.
It’s been a while since most Philippine-based BPO companies shifted from office-centric to temporary remote work setups. However, many still have yet to get the hang of working from home due to a number of reasons.
Distractions at home (e.g. kids playing and running around the house), noisy neighbors (and their pets), loud speeding vehicles (if your home’s situated near a thoroughfare)—you name it. All of these external factors (including the ones that weren’t named) can ruin your focus and momentum.
That’s why we’ve asked some of our employees on how they managed to stay productive despite distractions here and there. With their help, we’ve come up with three of the best work from home tips that they use themselves to help you stay efficient:
1. See the big picture
In an environment teeming with possible causes of interruptions, an effective time management scheme is your best bet.
“I employ time management techniques. What I do is plot my schedule of to-dos for the day and designate blocks of time to accomplish those tasks,” Staff Domain (SD) IT Manager Joe Dela Paz said.
For Joe, taking a quick break after fulfilling a task helps him prepare for the next ones.
“The bigger picture is, I always motivate myself to finish these tasks within the stipulated time using an agile principle approach,” Joe said.
A father to his seven-year-old and a six-month-old, he believes he has to manage his time well so “I can also provide assistance to my wife in taking care of our kids.”
2. Maintain a morning routine
Krisline Avila, a social media specialist, makes it a point to rise up early every single day to do her daily routine because it keeps her going.
“I stay productive and motivated working from home by waking up early and maintaining a daily yoga routine before I eat breakfast and get some brewed coffee,” Krisline said.
According to her, keeping photos of her family members in sight on her workspace helps her stay motivated and focused, because they’re the primary reasons why she does what she does.
For Maicah Anjail, a drafter and mom to her four-year-old son, skipping meals and not taking quick break aren’t going to cut it if you’re aiming to be productive all throughout the day.
“Don’t skip any meal and give yourself a break even if you’re too busy. It helps your mind relax for a little while,” Maicah said.
3. Have a specific work area
Designating a particular place in your home to be a work area is crucial in staying productive. Why? Because doing so helps the creative juices flow.
“I set up my own working area and make myself comfortable,” Kaye Mangabat, one of our Business Development Managers, said. She added that doing some rituals such as lighting up a soy candle while working can alleviate stress.
Kaye’s key piece of advice: “Never work on your bed.”
Madison Sia, one of our accountants and a mother to her three-year-old toddler, believes that setting up a “home office” is the key to having a distraction-free working environment.
“Keeping tabs on my daily to-do list helps me track which tasks are urgent that must be prioritized,” Madison said. “I try to stay away from my mobile phone as much as I can even if someone texts me.”
Find your rhythm: Stay driven.
Working from home isn’t easy. To be successful, one must find his or her rhythm on a daily basis. This helps you stay driven and motivated.
While fulfilling your duties to your company or client is important at every turn, one must always find ways to bond with the ones that matter most in your life.
