Deficit Done Right: A Lifestyle 180 Workplace Fitness Webinar

September Focus: Sustainable Nutrition and Fitness

This September, Staff Domain’s Lifestyle 180 wellness initiative put the spotlight on sustainable nutrition and workplace fitness with an engaging webinar on mastering calorie deficit the healthy way.

Launched as a 10-month workplace wellness initiative early this year, Staff Domain’s Lifestyle 180 program continues to support our employees’ healthy habits and personal transformation. This holistic approach to workplace fitness and wellbeing has brought together experts, engaging sessions, and practical tips to help our team feel healthier both in and outside of work.

Our latest event, the Deficit 101 Webinar, was yet another activity we had in store in line with the program’s goals.  It was an engaging and practical online session designed to help our team make informed decisions about their health and fitness, shining the spotlight on the familiar but often misunderstood topic of going on a calorie deficit.

Meet the Coach

We were privileged to welcome back Bea Chan, a licensed physical therapist and a senior personal trainer, as our guest speaker. With her ideal blend of clinical expertise and real-world fitness coaching, Bea has become a trusted figure in our company-wide wellness journey. She brings not just knowledge, but also an approachable energy that resonates with employees of all fitness levels. Her background made her the perfect guide to help the participants tackle the subject many have heard of but few truly grasp.

Exploring the Calorie Deficit Journey

Right from the get-go, the webinar was buzzing with enthusiasm. Attendees logged in on time, ready with their questions, while Coach Bea jumped right in with energy and clarity.

On paper, a calorie deficit sounds simple: burn more than you eat. In practice, however, it’s far more complex: Do too little, results may not show. Do too much, you risk fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, or, even worse, burnout and health setbacks.

It’s a balancing act that requires mindful effort, not extreme measures.

"Fill your diet with nutrient-dense food. We’re not talking about deprivation, we’re talking about moderation."

Recognising this challenge, Coach Bea framed the discussion around safe, sustainable practices. Playfully dubbing the sessions as a guide to “Surviving the ‘Hunger’ Games,” she explained not just what calorie deficit is,  but also how to do it right. Her talk highlighted:

      • The science behind the practice and how it affects the body
      • Practical tips for adjusting eating habits without extreme restriction
      • The importance of pairing proper nutrition with regular physical activity
      • Common myths and mistakes people make when attempting to lose weight

Our guest speaker passionately emphasised that caloric deficit should never be about starving or restricting food, but about finding balance in fuelling your body with the right nutrients while creating a manageable energy gap that supports overall health.

A Little Food for Thought

Even with clinical terms like “ghrelin” and “BCAA” being thrown into the mix, the discussion stayed light and relatable, burning through fitness myths faster than a cardio workout.

To cap it off, the open Q&A session gave participants the chance to bring forward their questions and concerns. From portion sizes to practical exercise routines, Coach Bea shared tailored, achievable advice. Her patience and clarity ensured that everyone walked away with insights they could apply right away, be it at home, the gym, or even in the workplace.
